The Syndrome Theory

Last night a particular bass pan player who shall remail nameless disclosed an interesting theory based on observations he made when he first arrived in Jamaica.
See, when he first reached UWI he was hard pressed to find any attractive females, which was rather disheartening for him, having just left Trinidad and all with atleast "4 out of any 5" females being gorgeous. He even went as far as to keeping tally with his other Trini friend to see how many encounters with beautiful females they would have in a day, which sadly was rarely more than 1, if that lucky.

At this point now there was some weak attempt by one of the Jamaican guys at the table to disagree, to which this nameless bass player who likes to whine on pans, poles and anything else he can to every type of music possible, basically said that the standard of Jamaican men has been lowered... and something to the effect of ignorance is bliss was chimed in.

He did state though that he found that the more time he spent in Ja the better the females started to look...he went as far as to calling the effect "a syndrome".
Note, this is not to be confused with getting to know a person who doesn't look all that great but because they have a wonderful personality they start to look better to you. No, apparently we jamaican women have something somewhat "infectious" about us that despite our apparent initial "grotesque" appearance, the more time you spend around us the better we will start to look.
Later in trying to "help" a few of us girls understand better, One of the guys even went as far as to compare it to a sailor who has been out to sea and hasn't been with a female in a looooooong time thinking that the first woman he sets eyes on is gorgeous though she might actually look like a horse's arse.

So there is the theory, which I have tried to relate in as an unbiased way as I can in order to get objective feedback from you guys.
Agree or disagree?

  • Bass conduct code 7 (sub-section BS-24.7) states that if it is uttered from the mouth of a bass it must indeed have elements of truth. Certainly I can understand the cultural differences and thus cultural norms that impact on perspectives. I also know that said bass "player" was not speaking about a shortage in the panyard, where we have a heavy concentration of 'hotties'!

It means that he was speaking of a shorage in his progamme and perhaps in the greater Pure and Applied faculty.

The same phenomena of perspective rating will dictate that in a deluge of beauty the bar will be raise and all will become plain/normal. Only the exquisite will stand out. It is an unfortunate occurance but on with which Jamaican men have lived with all their lives. Hence some try to acquire as many as possible and others look outside at the weird and not-so-wonderful of other cultures simply because they are different.

  • This 'bass player' (yet to be confirmed because we have not yet have a bass meeting) is quite an interesting fellow.

Poor thing must be in culture shock. Must be he realised, upon touching our fertile soil (either way), just what he was missing in that foreign, funny-speaking twin island sate. It can't be helped. When one realises that he has been missing out on the best, when all he had to do was fly away - it can be embarassing, nerve racking and downright humiliating. A story must be made up.

Since I am Jamaican and I know quite a few very beautiful women I am confused by the supposed lack of sightings. I know a few qualified opthamologists, dear.

I am furthur confused by this:

    'At this point now there
was some weak attempt by one of the Jamaican guys at the table to disagree'

Err? Aren't all their mothers and girlfriends Jamaican? Someone needs to send a couple of anonymous emails. Could be it was reported incorrectly, but I am disappointed. They must have had looks of horror on their faces while shaking hands with this 'bass player' underneath the table. Not good at all.

It is usual for J'can males to not know a good thing. They search all over the globe and realise too late that there is no other woman on earth like a J'can woman. For shame!

    This is not acceptable!

The Bass Organization will convene and discuss as is appropriate.

  • I think its culture shock that has caused this 'syndrome', if you can call it that. As far as I know, in Trinidad, as attractive as the women are there, they are only 'one kind of attractive'. The only kind of offering one can look forward to is 'Indian cuisine'. There are good Indian meals, average Indian meals and great Indian meals, but all thats on the menu is traditionally Indian. Jamaica differs from Trinidad in that you can get almost any kind of meal here. If all you want is 'Indian food' sure its available, but if you want 'Indian' cuisine with a side of 'Chinese', you can get it. If you want Jamaican cuisine mixed with spices from any of the other Islands, it can be found here. African cuisine with Indian spices? No problem mon. Jamaican rice and peas with chinese meats? Come to Jamaica and feel all right. The combinations are endless. Our women take the theme 'Out of many one people' very seriously. The VAST variety of dishes available here cannot be found in Trinidad nor anywhere else. So as far as im concerned, this bass player's along with his other Trini friends' problem, is simply one of culture shock. They are not used to seeing so many different dishes on the menu and are maybe too afraid to try them out? But they are calling...even though they are reluctant to try out the different meals available the aroma is powerful. That, is what is "infectious".

  • D has got it.

  • I love it D, I love it!

Now you see, there is some level of truth to the syndrome, it has to be said. Especially when there's something appealing about the opposite sex (personality, figure, etc) it's easy for the person to become somewhat attractive. I don't however think that this 'syndrome' is something that only Jamaicans suffer from, which is my problem with the theory. I informed the Trini in question of my disappointment at the lack of 'hotness' that my eyes were blessed with seeing in my time in Trinidad last year. To be honest, the pan girls were easily hotter than most locals I saw.

I will admit, however, that I've met a fair share of great looking Trini girls here in Jamaica, so I know that they exist, and probably in good numbers. But 4 out of 5? Not likely. The Trini in question isnt qualified to make such a judgement about women from his own land- it appears he has the syndrome too.
