Well Rounded Education

Every now and then we will have a lecturer who decides to keep our interest in class by giving us "practical" aspects of the topic at hand. Today's class on drug abuse was a classic example of that.
Being a pharmacology class, she starts off by giving us a list of prescribed drugs which may be abused, and their effects on the different systems in the body. After getting all the text book examples out of the way the real teaching started.
This ranged from learning the steps in how to cut cocaine (ofcourse after indicating the therapeutic history of coca leaves) and make crack rocks, to quoting a recovering addict who stated that the first time he got high it felt like "a thousand orgasms".
Ofcourse being in Jamaica where one of our major export materials is cannabis, it goes without mention that much of the class was spent discussing the effects of Mary Jane...did you know that the effects of smoking a single joint will only last about 45 minutes, but if ingested (space cake, or bush tea) the effects may remain for a full 24hrs?
Heroine and party drugs were also spoken of, but not in any great deal. Of interest, one of the date rape drugs, Rohypnol (GHB) is actually a prescribed drug used as a sedative (aka Mexican Valium).
And on the schedule for tomorrow's learning we have a Pharmaco (yes, again) lab in which we observe the effects of ingesting large quantities of alcohol in a short period by virgin drinkers (sorry, none of y'all qualify; Trinis were actually banned from participating in this experiment because the liquor would disappear from the lab and surface on one of the halls).
If only all topics we had to cover on our syllabus were as interesting as above (sigh)

How sad is it that when I first heard of the circumstances surrounding Pakistani coach Woolmer's death my first thought was Jamaican criminals don't have the patience to kill someone by asphyxiation? I mean if it was chopped to death, shot, stabbed, even acid burns then I would have asked why them couldn't behave until after cricket done and gone, or if they couldn't choose someone more low-profiled.
And, not meaning to sound cold but, under the assumption that he was killed by someone closer to home, why couldn't they do it in their own backyard? Why bring the bad publicity to us when we already have enough? Didn't they look and learn from the Escobar incident in 1994?

Big Up Ms. Jamaica

Had to share this one, cause when I saw it I was rolling.
PS If you're in an office setting or around children I'ld suggest you lower the volume

She lives!!

Ok, so I haven't been the most active blogger...lol, I couldn't even say that with a straight face.
Let's just say I am not able to blog as often as I would like.

For those who haven't spoken with me, or seen me in awhile...I'm alive, though I do think UWI has a not so secret plot to kill me as well as all the other students who have had the poor sense of judgement to choose med as the life-long dream to pursue (thinking back on it I think I maybe should have chosen the secret agent gig... somehow having bullets shot at me seems better for my health).

As a new year approaches (Chinese new year, and yet another 22nd birthday) I would just like to say thanks to all family and friends who have supported me thru my insanity (and to those who offered to take me to Bellevue - gweh, dem stop give weh the free tin a milo); thanks to all those who helped me de-stress (even when they were playing Devil's advocate and knew I should be studying); thanks to those who avoided me while I was studying so as not to tempt me with glimpses of the alternative life (which involved kalooki, from which I am having severe withdrawal syndromes). Thanks guys, for these things, and soo much more.

So although it might seem weird and a bit late, in the ordinary western world, - happy new year and all the best. My personal wish is that this year be much better than last, and that it may bring you everything you wish for in life which is good (for you that is, cause if it's only good for someone else then it ain't much good to you is it?! unless it's that selfless love thing and you securing your space in Heaven, in which case you still benefiting and it ain't really selfless, then you not really getting into Heaven now are you and it goes back to being selfless(???)...sorry I started rambling, I'll stop just now)
